More details have emerged about the Zach Galifianakis film shooting in the Asheville area this summer.
Tona B. Dahlquist Casting posted a casting call for the “Untitled Armored Car Project” June 10 on the company’s Facebook page — and as a comment on a previous story I wrote for the Citizen-Times about the project.
The casting call confirms that filming will take place in the Asheville area this July and August, and the production is seeking extras.
The movie is set to star Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig.
Reports also indicate that the film will shoot a few weeks in Wilmington. According to IMDB.com, the movie is set to release Aug. 14, 2015. The movie database website lists the film’s title as “Loomis Fargo.”
Production is also supposed to start July 7. Producers include Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live fame, and Danny McBride is listed as one of the writers, according to a Wilmington-based film industry blog.
McBride, a North Carolina School of the Arts graduate, made his acting debut in the Asheville-based film “All the Real Girls.” The 2003 film featured Asheville native Paul Schneider as the main character; he also contributed to the screenplay. Comedian Galifianakis is also a North Carolina native; he was born in Wilkesboro.
The film is based on the $17.3 million cash robbery of the regional vault of Loomis Fargo & Company in Charlotte in 1997. The heist, which was largest cash robbery in the United States at the time, was organized by an armored car driver and vault supervisor.

Tona B. Dahlquist Casting also organized extras for 2012’s “The Hunger Games,” which was shot in Western North Carolina and Charlotte. The company is also helping hire stand-ins and background actors for the film “Max,” which was slated to film in the Asheville area last week, according to earlier casting calls.
“Max” stars Lauren Graham, most recognized for her role in “The Gilmore Girls,” and Thomas Haden Church, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005 for his supporting role in “Sideways.”
The film is about a dog that helped soldiers in Afghanistan and then returns to the U.S. He’s adopted by his handler’s family after “suffering a traumatic experience,” says IMDB.com. The movie database website also says the film is slated for a 2015 release date.
